Metabolism vs. Calories

Healthy Vibes. Chilled Lives.

There’s a lot of confusion around metabolism and calories — and it’s time to clear things up. Are they the same thing? Is one more important than the other when it comes to weight loss and health? Let’s break it down.

๐ŸŒช What is metabolism, really?

Metabolism is your body’s engine. It’s the process by which your body converts what you eat and drink into energy. Even when you're resting, your body needs energy for breathing, circulating blood, and repairing cells.

So no — metabolism isn’t just about burning fat. It’s about how efficiently your body runs.

๐Ÿงฎ And what about calories?

Calories are units of energy. Think of them like fuel for your body. Eat more calories than your body burns? The excess is stored (often as fat). Eat fewer than your body needs? It starts using stored energy — and you may lose weight.

⚖️ The Myth: A “slow metabolism” is why I gain weight.

Not always true.

Yes, metabolism varies slightly by person — based on genetics, muscle mass, activity level, and age — but most people gain weight from eating more calories than they burn, not because their metabolism is broken.

✅ What really works?

  1. Build lean muscle – Muscle burns more calories than fat, even at rest.

  2. Move daily – Walking, dancing, stretching… it all counts.

  3. Eat balanced meals – Protein, fiber, and healthy fats help regulate hunger and stabilize energy.

  4. Be consistent – Quick fixes don’t work. Your body thrives on rhythm.

๐Ÿง  Bottom Line:

Metabolism is your body's engine. Calories are the fuel. The goal isn’t to “boost” metabolism with a magic trick — it’s to fuel your body well, move often, and stay consistent.

๐ŸŽฏ Set the Goal. Become the Person.

Healthy Vibes. Chilled Lives. Here’s a little truth bomb from Jim Rohn that completely changed how I look at goal-setting: “The major reason for setting goals is what it makes of you to accomplish them.” Let that land. ✨ It’s not just about the number on the scale, the bank account, or the dream house. It’s about who you become in the process — more focused, more confident, more you . ๐ŸŒฟ At Fit ‘N’ Chill , this is how we do goals: ✅ 1. Write it down. Yes — with a pen! Your brain locks it in better when you physically write your goals. Keep them where you can see them (mirror, journal, phone screen... wherever works for you). ๐Ÿงญ 2. Know your WHY. Don’t just chase the goal. Understand why it matters . Do you want to feel strong? Confident? Have more energy for your kids? Anchor into your “why” and the “how” becomes easier. ๐Ÿงฉ 3. Break it down. Start small. One shake a day. A 10-minute walk. Swapping soda for water. Big goals are achieved through tiny, consistent...

Day One - It's all about Mindset!

My Fit N Chill journey began some years ago, when I began to work on my weight loss. I had become bloated and weighed at least 15 kg more than my desired weight.  I was also on a whole load of toxic patterns, become involved in a number of toxic situations that were no longer serving me. It took a few years to actually have the courage to realise the toxicity which was affecting my health. And ultimately, my wellness. I was in an awful state all-round. A painful break up triggered work on my mindset. It was not some namby-pamby journey but true self-development.  I did work on Mindvalley and with Jackey Backman , two powerful resources that helped me push through, not only grief, but the release of what no longer served me.  Months later, I left a job that was mostly causing me grief - and refashioned what was left into friendship. All the while, I used all the skills I had - and all that was available to me online - to be able to move forward.  I even attended...
